Abstract
The purpose of this study was to compare the observed elastic behavior of AISC standard framed beam connections to the behavior predicted by derived, design equations. After review of previously reported research showed that existing data was not suitable for comparing observed and predicted behavior, a testing program was established to test nine pairs of standard framed beam connections.
A comparison of the following four characteristics of behavior are reported in this paper: moment at yield, rotation at yield, slope of the elastic portion of the moment-rotation curve, and the location of the center of rotation. The comparison will show that the derived, design equations underestimate moment capacity, rotation, and the distance from the tension end of the clip angles to the center of rotation. It will also be shown that the design equations fail to consistently predict the slope of the elastic portion of the moment-rotation curve.
