Abstract
MUMPS is a high level computer language that was designed at Massachusett's General Hospital in 1967. The purpose of this thesis is to describe a PL/I version of MUMPS which is designed for an IBM computer running the VM operating system. Specifically, the thesis describes how a PDP-11 FORTRAN version of MUMPS was converted into a PL/I version suitable for a single-user environment. The problems that arose during the conversion are described in detail. The thesis concludes with an extensive examination of the ways in which the single-user version can be efficiently transformed into a multi-user system.
