Metabolic responses to various strength glucose solutions ingested prior to exercise

Abstract
The effects of pre-exercise glucose ingestion on the changes in blood glucose, free fatty acid, lactic acid, and insulin induced by 30 minutes of exercise at about 60% V02max were investigated. Four male and two female subjects were studied while riding a bicycle ergometer, 30 minutes after ingestion of water, 0.36 g kg-1bw of glucose or 0.54 g kg-1bw of glucose. When compared to the water trial, there was no difference in blood lactate levels as a result of preexercise glucose ingestion. Plasma glucose increased 39% as a result of the low glucose load, while the ingestion of the moderate glucose load caused a 41% increase. These increases caused significant differences in the glucose concentrations at rest between both the low glucose (P < .001), the moderate glucose (P < .01), and water. No significant differences were noted during the subsequent time periods. Plasma free fatty acid levels increased from rest and then decreased slightly at minute 30. There was no difference noted due to the pre-exercise ingestion of either of the glucose solutions. Serum insulin increased to coincide with the rise in glucose at rest and then declined during exercise. Significant differences in the serum insulin levels were measured at rest for both the moderate and low glucose trials. The results of this study indicate that a low strength glucose solution ingested 30 minutes prior to exercise will not impair the mobilization of free fatty acids, while the ingestion of a moderate strength glucose solution may impair the mobilization of free fatty acids.
