A computer-assisted instruction system for teaching elementary FORTRAN programming concepts
A system of computer programs for providing computer-assisted instruction to students in elementary FORTRAN programming courses is presented in this thesis. The system consists of seven lesson modules, written in the COURSEWRITER III language for an IBM 370/148, and a short handout associated with each module. The first lesson introduces the student to the cathode ray tube terminals and the remaining lessons focus on programming. The handouts are written in a humorous manner in order to promote interest. . The modules likewise maintain a conversational tone so that the students will feel at ease with the computer.
The design and operation of the system are described and examples of the handouts and terminal sessions are included in the appendices. The system was tested in two sections of Computer Science 1510 at the University of Tennessee during Winter Quarter 1979. In this study the lessons were used as a supplement to the normal classroom instruction received by Computer Science 1510 students. Volunteers from the two classes were divided into a control and an experimental group, with the experimental group participating in the program. A posttest was given to both groups near the end of the quarter. Results of this test and student comments are described in the thesis. The posttest and evaluation questionnaire appear in the appendices. The system was determined to be a useful technique for presenting elementary programming concepts to novice programmers.
