Abstract

Prior to this study, no attitudinal research has been conducted in Knoxville, Tennessee on foreign language study on the elementary school level. This study was conducted to determine the general attitudes of principals, teachers, and parents/guardians in Knoxville toward foreign language study on the elementary school level.

A "Foreign Language Attitude Survey Knoxville, Tennessee 1984" questionnaire and a Scan-Tron computerized answer form were distributed to every principal, teacher, and parent/guardian in 10 selected elementary schools in Knoxville. Of a grand population of 3,666, 1,102 people responded to the questionnaire.

The responses to the survey appear to be highly supportive of foreign language study on all school levels. The study's data should be immediately disseminated to populations interested in foreign language study, and action should be taken to incorporate the Knoxville City School District's Pilot FLEX program as a permanent component of the elementary school's regular curriculum.
