Discriminant function analysis of woodpecker structural niches
Discriminant function analysis, a multivariate statistical method, was employed to quantify the structural niches of eastern deciduous forest woodpecker species during foraging. ,The analysis was based upon variables associated with the structure of the vegetation. Data were subjected to three methods of analysis. Each species was first considered in isolation for presence-absence comparisons of variables. Each species was then analyzed in relation to all other species present, using both one- and threediscriminant function axes. Decision scales and SYMAP computer maps were investigated for possible use as predictors of woodpecker species' inhabitation. The methodology is applicable to both the identification and quantification of niche parameters and to the management of wildlife habitat.
