Abstract

Simulation and control studies of the Experimental Breeder Reactor-II have been performed using a linear model which includes the reactor, intermediate heat exchanger and the steam generator. The previously developed linear, primary system model is modified and updated with the most recent data. A steam generator model is developed including a three-element controller model. The subsystems are defined in modular form and then combined for simulation using the software MATRIXx. The inherent safety characteristics of the EBR-II system are verified through open-loop simulations of the subsystem models and the combined model.

The modern control theory design routines are studied and several design applications are performed using the capabilities of MATRIXx. The linear, quadratic Gaussian compensator (LQG) design is considered for each EBR-II subsystem. The responses of the closed-loop models to several standard step perturbations show an improvement in the system behavior compared to those for the open-loop case. An evaluation of the three-element controller and the optimal regulator results indicates that the performances are comparable. The LQG compensator IV is found to be more robust with respect to the modeling errors of the open-loop system than the three-element controller. State estimator and reference tracking controller designs are also performed and the closed-loop simulation results of the EBR-II steam generator model using these controllers are obtained. The responses show that both strategies provide optimized control actions with high performance.
