The Knoxville livestock market
Farmers over a large area of Tennessee and surrounding states depend on Knoxville as a market outlet for their livestock. Part of the animals purchased are re-shipped to other points, but most of them are packed here and distributed over a wide area of the southeastern states. Knoxville has one of the largest auction markets of the South. This study was undertaken to get a better understanding of this important and complex market so that all connected with the livestock industry can intelligently work toward an improved and more efficient market.
The purpose of this study is to give the reader an overall view of the movement, physical facilities for handling, marketing methods, regulations, and marketing problems of livestock in Knoxville. Data on origin, destination, and seasonality of movement are shown as grand total figures in terms of value for all livestock followed by data on relative importance of each kind of livestock.
