Abstract

The purpose of this study was to create a master planting plan for the Roane State Community College campus. A master plan for development of campus facilities was completed by an architectural firm but it contained few concepts concerning the landscaping of the campus. A planting plan was needed for the entire campus which would take into account future expansion and which could be implemented along with the facilities master plan.


Five guidelines to be used in planning the community college landscape were developed for this study. These were:

1. landscape development should fit the site,

2. landscape development should be relevant to the uses of the grounds,

3. the campus should be developed with the goals and programs of the college in mind,

4. landscape development should relate the campus to the surrounding land and community, and

5. the campus landscape, although composed of many parts, must function as one unit.

At the time of the study there was a need for trees in the campus landscape to provide scale and unity and to define spaces. The three planting plans were designed for this and to relate the campus to the surrounding landscape. The plants that were specified were chosen for their form, color, and texture; for their mature height and spread; for their resistance to diseases and insects; and for their ability to perform well in the study area.

It was recommended that the campus landscape be given the best possible maintenance using proper management practices and realizing that over time the landscape will change. Maintenance must be sensitive to this change.
