Abstract
Forest fire records of the Southern Appalachian region as compiled by the Department of Agriculture (page 10) and the various state departments of forestry show that spark arresters are necessary. It remains to be seen whether those in use at present are satisfactory. Judging from conditions as found in the areas covered by this survey, and from the opinions of lumbermen and foresters interviewed, new designs of spark arresters are not needed. At present there are two efficient patented arresters on the market and a method of screening the smoke box, simple enough to be installed in the ordinary shop, that are as efficient as can be expected.
