Abstract

The collection and analysis of the telephone traffic data at a telephone central office governs, to a great extent, the ability of the telephone company to maintain adequate service to its subscribers. The purpose of this project was to develop a system for collecting, recording, and analyzing at a central location traffic data from telephone central offices.

This project uses a minicomputer (General Automation SPC 16/65) in conjunction with a Telesciences Model TE 300-500 GMT terminal. Located in the telephone office under study, the Telesciences terminal accumulates the necessary data. The minicomputer, in a central location, accesses the field terminal, reads the data, stores it on magnetic tape, analyzes it, and prints the results.

The main development work for the project was the building and programming of the minicomputer system. Structured around General Automotion's Real Time Executive (RTx) software package, the system programming periodically initiates calls to the field terminal, stores the data received, and analyzes it using standard formulas and tables reflecting the configuration of the central office.

With this system the performance of individual circuits as well as entire circuit groups can be monitored. The capability to monitor individual circuits by the central office equipment itself has become available only recently with the advent of the stored program control telephone switch. The number of offices having such switches is stili few compared to those having earlier generations of telephone switching.

The system developed for this project is applicable to all equipment. of these earlier generation telephone offices.
