The use of satellite communication in civil helicopter operations
This thesis explores the potential use of satellite communication in helicopter operations. A satcom system is space-based and does not have the problems and limitations of current VHF, UHF, and HF communications systems. Also, the satellite network is not prone to destruction by natural disaster. Motorola and TRW Space and Defense are currently designing satcom systems that may be of interest to the helicopter industry. The FAA is also working with the industry to devise an infrastructure geared toward the unique operating characteristics of helicopters. Further research is necessary to determine helicopter operating parameters and human factors issues involved in instrument flight. With improvements in cockpit displays and computer processors, satcom with voice and data link capability will become an integral part of helicopter operations in the NAS.
