Abstract

A solution calorimeter has been developed which is capable of measuring the heats of interaction of gases with liquids, including systems of limited solubility. . The calorimeter is more convenient and more versatile than any other gas/liquid calorimeter yet described. In tests of the calorimeter, enthalpies of solution of a series of hydrocarbon gases in benzene, carbon tetrachloride, and tetrahydrofuran were measured. The electrical calibration of the instrument was tested by determining the heats of solution of carbon dioxide in O.l0oo N sodium hydroxide solutions and of strontium chloride in water. A thermodynamic analysis of the calorimetric procedure was also developed.
