Abstract
This study traces the growth and development of the University of Tennessee during the administration of President Brown Ayres (1904 to 1919). The thesis, therefore, comprises only one portion of the University story. The most recent as well as the most complete undertaking on the development of the University is Dr. S. J. Folmsbee's history, still mostly in manuscript, of the University from its origin to the beginning of the administration of Dr. Charles Dabney in 1887. It serves as an informative source on the early struggles of this growing institution.
