Accident analysis of I-40 near Rockwood, Tennessee
The purpose of this study was to investigate possible contributing factors to the accidents that have occurred on a section of Interstate 40 overlooking Rockwood, Tennessee. This section is located between mileage markers 14l and 142 in the eastbound lanes of Interstate 40, in Roane County.
A study of the location was conducted. This study included (1) time-lapse photography and human surveillance to observe the movements of traffic and (2) data obtained from the Tennessee Department of Transportation to determine the geometrics of the area in question.
Based upon the findings presented in this study, possible contributing factors to accidents at this location are discussed. Also, recommendations are presented for improvements that can be made in the area to lower the accident risk; and possibly prevent future accidents at this particular location. A proposal for further investigation by the Tennessee Department of Transportation is also included.
