Abstract
INTRODUCTION In 1930 Alfred A. Knopf published one of the most controversial books ever to appear before the American public. It was Franz Kafka's The Castle, translated from the German by Edwin Muir. Its publication marked the beginning of one of the major controversies in modern American criticism.
