Abstract

This thesis develops a general theory that explains and describes the principles of operation and control of the solid-state thyristor cycloconverter as a forced commutated frequency changer. It is one of the elements of a variable-speed constant-frequency (VSCF) power-generating system for ac to ac frequency conversion.


The power source in this system is an induction generator with capacitive excitation. Performance characteristics of this machine in a VSCF power-generating system are also developed.

The frequency changer in the VSCF system utilizes bidirectional switches (TRIACs) to control the output frequency and input displacement factor.
