Abstract
This study describes the design of an optimal discrete-time regulator used to maintain the temperature in an irradiation experiment performed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. A review of the mathematical basis of the state-variable regulator is followed by the development of the dynamical equations which describe the heater system. System-modeling experiments are explained, and simulation studies of the controller's operation are reviewed. Finally, the implementation of the controller on a dedicated minicomputer is presented.
