Abstract

The major part of this thesis is a book manuscript based on a hike across the length of Tennessee during the summers of 1979-80. The narrative describes historical and natural sites in Tennessee as well as people and communities encountered on the trip. The author and his wife, the principal subjects of the story, develop a fuller understanding of rural life in Tennessee and of their relationship to the natural world.

The manuscript, supported by several dozen photographs (both color and black and white), is intended for publication by a commercial book publisher. The book would contain about 168 pages, 6 x 9 inches, with a type area of 42 x 26 picas. The finished 20-chapter book would be about 75 percent text, 25 percent illustrations.
