Abstract

One operation requiring the implementation of a local area network is the ability to transfer large files of data between mainframe computers attached to the network. Many companies utilizes IEEE 802 networks and the Digital Network Architecture DECnet protocol suite as the means by which large files of data are transported between processors involved in their manufacturing process. In order to support file transport over the network, a means of utilizing diverse network architectures and topologies is required. The challenge is to devise a strategy for meshing the physical cable plant, communications protocols, and DECnet software to form the communications link between processors sharing data. Solutions to these problems require a thorough understanding of the different methods used to interconnect networks, performance characteristics of the solutions, and trade-offs. One solution to this required interconnection involves the deployment of data link layer bridges to extend the IEEE 802 networks. Development of technical specifications required for datalink bridges for such an application are examined in detail. This development process takes into account rapidly evolving network standards, expanding local area network technology, and the network implementation planning that may be in progress in a manufacturing company. The approach is (1) to begin with a functional set of requirements, (2) to examine currently available product offerings, and (3) to compare these products against the implementation plans. The result is a technical specification utilized to obtain a system of data link bridges and a management system which supports the manufacturing environment and conforms to the manufacturing company's networking strategy. This paper represents the culmination of one and one-half years of research by the author; this effort was initiated due to the lack of previously available equipment which met the functional requirements of networking in a manufacturing environment.
