Abstract
The purpose of this study is not to prove that manufacturing is good or that it is bad, but to try to find its effect on rural welfare.
To find the effect of industrial development on rural welfare, we selected four counties, selected eight school communities in each county and made a careful, first hand study of each of them. We secured data on Hawkins and Sullivan for both 1914 and 1925, and on Anderson for 1906 and 1926, and on Knox for 1896 to 1926.
