Abstract

This paper presents results of empirical experiments with an automated library reference system similar to the SMART system. Stop list generation, stem reduction techniques, discrimination functions, synonym handling, and retrieval weighting techniques are discussed in terms of their effects upon query precision and recall. Other techniques are discussed in terms of theory.

The general outline of an alternative system for small computers is also presented, along with performance results.
