Abstract

One hundred and fifty residents of Knox County, Tennessee were interviewed to determine their participation in eleven selected outdoor recreation activities, their use of leisure time, and preference for future outdoor recreation developments.

Pleasure driving, picnicking, nature walks, fishing, and swimming had the largest percentage of respondents participating. Horseback riding and snow skiing had the lowest percentage of respondents participating.

Respondents spent their leisure time watching television, reading, and having friends visit, participating in charitable activities, and outdoor recreation.

The residents interviewed preferred outdoor recreation developments in their immediate neighborhoods. Parks for pre school children, neighborhood swimming pools, and large neighborhood recreation areas with opportunities for camping, picnicking, swimming, and nature walks were the most desirable developments.
