Analysis and verification of the icing scaling equations
Airframe icing tests could be conducted more efficiently if a procedure for the use of scale models could be verified. Also, air-craft and engine performance in icing conditions could be evaluated more thoroughly if icing test parameters could be scaled to avoid test facility operational limitations. This thesis describes an experimental icing scaling research program conducted at the Arnold Engineering Development Center which has verified a set of icing scaling equations for a limited range of icing conditions. By applying these equations, test conditions can be calculated that, when established experimentally, will produce ice accretions that are geometrically scaled to within the repeatability of the ice accretion measurement technique. The application of these scaling equations to airframe icing tests is illustrated by means of two practical examples. Limitations of the method are also discussed.
