Abstract

A sincere thanks goes to the following organizations and individuals whose help provided the support and incentive for completing this work: Martin Marietta Energy Systems, Inc., which provided the financial support and facilities for experimentation under the Department of Energy Contract No. DE-AC05-840R21400; my academic advisor. Dr. Jack Watson, who gave much of his time and energy for reviewing my work and who made valuable suggestions with respect to model development, experimental techniques, and report preparation; my supervisor at Martin Marietta Energy Systems, Glenn Horner, whose patience was essential for completion of this work; the laboratory assistance provided by Carl Thomas; secretarial support provided by Cookie Murphy; and finally my wife, Claudia, whose words of encouragement were most valuable.
