Exhibition of family photos : influence of photographic orientation, meaning of family photos, and individual variables

The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among personal time orientation, family time orientation, social reticence, perceived family functioning, photographic orientation, meaning of family photographs, and photographic exhibition. The sample consisted of 135 females who were parents of at least one child between 2 and 12 years of age. The respondents ranged from 22 to 57 years of age. The Family Photography Conceptual Model was helpful in understanding why and how family photographs are exhibited in the home. As predicted, personal time orientation, family time orientation, social reticence, perceived family functioning, photographic orientation, meaning of family photos, and photographic exhibition are interrelated. Moreover, motivation (especially motivation for personal enjoyment) and amount of family photographs exhibited, including those displayed in public areas of the home, appear to be the significant components of photographic exhibition.
