The tests were run with all conditions the same, Except during the first the preventers were in operation, and in the second they were not. One day was left between the testis go that if the preventers had any effect on the cleanliness of the tubes they would have time to come {to what would be normal conditions, without the preventers in operation.

The tests were carried on according to the rules of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the alternate method of starting and stopping being used.

Observations were taken every 15 minutes, The feed water was measured by a venturi meter placed between the hot water pump and the boilers. The quality of steam was obtained with a throttling calorimeter. The flue gas temperature with an electrical pyrometer., The coal sashes were weighed oh plat. form scales.
