Abstract

This study was conducted to examine the effects of a freshmen special program at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Students participating in the Volunteer Community special program were compared to a group of students not participating in the Volunteer Community. The two groups were compared on locus of control and achievement determined by grade point average. Data on the two variables were collected. A significant difference was found relative to grade point average. The Volunteer Community demonstrated a higher grade point average than the non volunteer group. The results yielded no significant difference on the locus of control variable. The information obtained in the study needs to be used in conjunction with a larger pool of information before conclusive results can be established. This study does provide a seed for future research.
