A survey of tasks performed by administrative support secretaries, word processing supervisors, and word processing operators

The problem of this study was to determine the roles of administrative support secretaries, Word Processing supervisors, and Word Processing operators in small and large business offices.

The data were based on the responses to 105 questionnaires collected from administrative support secretaries, Word Processing supervisors, and Word Processing operators in 22 firms in Chattanooga and Nashville, Tennessee. Frequencies, rankings, and medians were used to analyze the tasks.

The tasks performed by the administrative support secretaries are consistent with those described in the professional literature.

The tasks performed by the Word Processing supervisors are consistent with those described in the professional literature.

The tasks performed by the Word Processing operators are not consistent with those described in the professional literature.

The job titles of the Word Processing personnel and administrative support secretaries are not consistent with those described in the professional literature.

The size of the company is related to the types and frequencies of tasks performed.
