Abstract
A transient model is used to investigate the history of induced airflow as well as the dispersion of vehicle pollution within a highway tunnel. Simulation of traffic conditions including traffic start from undisturbed conditions, complete stall, slowdown, and/or normal speed resumption, pollutant concentration build-up, and propagation through the tunnel is computed, and parametric studies are reported.

The model assumes one-dimensional, imcompressible airflow in the tunnel. The governing equation of transient induced airflow is derived from momentum balance and of pollution concentration distribution from a mass balance on the pollutant. A computer program is developed for calculating the transient logitudinal air velocities and pollution concentrations. The program, TN. DOT/UTSI TRANS, provides numerical solution for a wide range of traffic conditions and tunnel configurations.
