Abstract

Data isolation is required in broadband cable systems to prevent unautho rized users from gaining access to the sensitive data of other users. One means of providing data isolation is to use equipment from two manufacturers to de liberately introduce an incompatibility between nonassociated users. This thesis develops the technical basis for the isolation and proposes that four layers of isolation exist when the proper equipment is chosen. Measured data from an ex perimental broadband LAN test network are presented to support the proposed theories. The resulting findings are that the sharing of a broadband LAN can be accomplished without compromising data security provided that protection for the nonsensitive modems is commensurate with that of the broadband network, administrative control is exercised over the sensitive modems, and appropriate data security procedures are applied to the entire network.
