Abstract

A prediction method was developed by Williams, Butler and Wood, (WBW) in 1961 which used linearized, inviscid flow theory for prediction of lift and excess thrust coefficient. The resulting work was developed into a prediction method for upper surface blown aircraft and tailored to The University of Tennessee Space Institute (UTSI) Ball-Bartoe Jetwing using the actual Jetwing physical dimensions for input. The data from the predictions were compared to data from full scale wind tunnel and flight tests. Additional comparisons were made to lift coefficient predictions from another prediction method. The Williams, Butler and Wood method is considered a simple and accurate preliminary design criteria which may be applied to other upper surface blown aircraft.
