The identification of competencies for the training of Recreational/Resort Ministers of the Southern Baptist Convention Home Mission Board

This study was concerned with identifying competencies which could be used to provide guidelines for the training of Resort Ministers in Resort Missions of the Southern Baptist Convention Home Mission Board.

The jury of experts consisted of 31 Resort Ministers who were identified by the Home Mission Board as having two or more years full-time experience in Resort Ministries. Twenty-one Resort Ministers responded to a written questionnaire which contained 59 competency statements in job performance, using a modified Likert five-point scale.

Computations of frequencies, mean scores, and modes were computed manually by the investigator for all competency statements.

Major conclusions, based on the findings, were:

1. Fifty-seven of the fifty-nine competencies were rated acceptable by Resort Ministers in their jobs, based upon the 2.259 minimum mean importance score set by the investigator. Only two competencies were rejected.

2. Competencies perceived by Resort Ministers relating to the Spiritual category received the most positive mean score of 1.320. Six of the seven Spiritual competencies rated 90% to 100% agreement.

3. Resort Ministers perceive competencies related to understanding and formulating goals as important to the total work of the ministry.

4. Program Implementation, Administration and Supervision, Program Planning, Professionalism, and Philosophical categories were perceived by Resort Ministers as strongly agree to agree, with Activity Selection and Program Evaluation receiving the lowest mean score ratings by Resort Ministers.
