Abstract

Heat exchanger characteristics are defined and a heat exchanger was designed which will provide an adequate coolant inlet temperature to the cooling passage of a venturi (a convergent-divergent nozzle). The venturi is used to meter air flowing at high temperatures. The heat flux to the venturi must be controlled to prevent component failure at the maximum air flow temperature. A three-dimensional finite-element computer code is utilized to verify safe temperature distribution throughout the venturi and to provide the cooling requirements for the heat exchanger. Based on the cooling requirements, a five-pass counterflow heat exchanger was designed that incorporated a finned tube heat transfer surface.
