Abstract

The purpose of the investigation conducted was to compare the basic turbojet thermodynamic pouter cycle to the ramjet, aft-fan turbofan, and front-fan turbofan cycles. A parallel objective was to evaluate how the cycles can be optimized thermodynamically, for specific purposes such a increased pouter density or fuel economy. Ideal and real-gas thermodynamic pouter cycle models were developed and were used to demonstrate the importance of cycle analyses for engine designs by comparing cycle performance and shout ing that fuel efficiency, air efficiency, and mission requirements are the key design factors for a cycles optimization process.
