Abstract
Numerous mild alternatives to the Wolff-Kishner reduction have been reported. These alternatives normally involve the reduction of tosylhydrazones with various hydride reagents. We have found that tosylhydrazones are readily reduced by bisbenzoyloxyborane which is less expensive and more readily available than many of the other reagents. The reaction conditions are mild and nearly all functional groups are tolerated. The results parallel those obtained in catecholborane reductions. Aliphatic, cyclic, and aryl tosylhydrazones are reduced to the corresponding hydrocarbons in high yields.
