Abstract
This dissertation deals with the soft x ray spectroscopy of solids. Soft X-rays, as we define them, have photon energies from 50 eV to 1000 eV. Our studies do not deal with core to core transitions, but will be restricted to spectra generated by transitions between a core level and the valence and conduction band states of solids. These spectra are different from atomic and molecular spectra and contain information about the electronic interactions that bond the atoms of a solid.
