Abstract
Using the algorithm of F. W. J. Olver and 0. J. Sookne for difference computing the eigenvectors of any second order linear equation in which recurrence procedures fail because of instability, a method is developed to approximate eigenvalues of an infinite system of difference equations. The method is illustrated by numerical computations. In addition, some qualitative properties of difference equations, which are reflected in the eigenvectors of the infinite matrix, are discussed.
