Abstract

The feasibility of generating torque and twist in thin-walled, closed cross-section structural members using piezoelectric elements is shown by investigating analytically, numerically, and experimentally firstly an aluminum flat plate model and then a composite beam model. The investigated concept is based on the application of piezoelectric elements distributed on the surface or embedded in the walls of a structural element. This study shows that this method is feasible as an alternative method of generating twist and control torque in structural members. The magnitude of twist and torque generated using piezoelectric elements is estimated.
