Abstract

A major role of school psychologists Is classifying for special education children having difficulty in school. Computers have increasingly become a part of this process. The type of computer program known as an expert system offer particular promise for simulating this classification task.

A rule-based expert system called WISCO was developed in PROLOG to model this task. The system was tried on 16 cases and the resulting decisions compared to those of the author and two samples of school psychologists. The expert system matched 69% to 94% of the decisions. Thus psychoeducational diagnosis seems to be one field in which it is reasonable to use expert system technology.
