Abstract
This thesis presents the modifications to a variable-air-volume (VAV) system designed to improve the system efficiency. An improved control strategy is applied using direct digital control. The system operates in a medium-size office building (85,000 ft.2 ) and is used only for cooling. The original VAV system experienced a problem (following new government regulations) in providing adequate air circulation for occupant comfort. The system was also incapable of using outside air for supplemental cooling.

Modifications focus upon three areas. First, 135 temperature sensors are installed in the various zones. These sensors are connected to two distributed microprocessors which are in turn connected to a host computer. Actual zone temperatures are used to adjust the set-point of the air leaving the cooling coils. Second, the capability for maintaining compliance with government regulations and providing documentation is provided. Third, the capability to bring in outside air for supplemental cooling is designed. Use of outside air is based on enthalpy calculations.
