Abstract
This thesis attempts to analyze the effect which religion, Christianity, and the Church exert in Heinrich Böll's 1972 Nobel prize-winning novel Gruppenbild mit Dame.
The first topic considered is the Catholic environment and its importance in the work. The next subject dealt with is Leni, the heroine around whom the novel is centered. Leni is a sensitive and warm-hearted woman who possesses the ability to love and care for fellow human beings. The former nun Klementina and the picture of the Church as presented in the novel is then examined. The fourth topic of the thesis is devoted to people in Leni's "group." The conclusion is drawn that religious aspects form the thematic core of Gruppenbild mit Dame.
