Abstract

In the preparation of this thesis, the aim has been to learn something of the nature of naphthalene and its direct application to the coal gas industry; not trying to give a broad general view of the gas industry as a whole.

This work was started upon the request of the superintendent of the Knoxville Gas Company. The object was two-fold, first- To acquire a knowledge of naphthalene and the troubles it causes to coal gas manufactories; second- to put this knowledge into Soe logical form from which useful data and references may be taken at a future date.

All the present day literature on the subject of naphthalene was carefully studied and only that part which was clear and logical was considered in this thesis.
