Analyses of mode structures in optical waveguides excited by specific spatial intensity distributions
The flow of electromagnetic energy in slab dielectric waveguides is studied. Boundary conditions are fitted at one end of a waveguide which acts as the source of input power (spatial intensity distribution) to excite the waveguides. The electric field of the wave which propagates along the direction of the axis of the waveguides is studied. The study begins by considering the single slab waveguide. Several input waveforms are used and the propagation patterns along the waveguide are observed. After gaining an understanding of the waveguiding properties in the single slab waveguide, coupling effects between parallel waveguides are studied. This study should provide a better understanding of the flow of energy along waveguides being exicted by different energy sources.
