Abstract

Analysis of charge exchange neutrals is the standard method for measuring ion behavior in tokamak plasmas. Limitations of this technique, which arise in dense and neutral beam heated plasmas, are discussed. Two 1 refinements which address these limitations are described: a neutral particle analyzer which incorporates both mass and energy resolution to distinguish different ion components such as the fast and thermal ions in bean-heated plasmas; and an improved data analysis procedure which accounts for the effects of profiles and neutral attenuation in dense plasmas. A simple 2D Monte Carlo neutral transport code was developed and used to investigate the effects of toroidally asymmetric neutral density profiles. Applications of these 1 methods to experiments in ISX are discussed; they include energy confinement studies on ISX-A, neutral beam heating and high beta studies on ISx-B, and pellet fueling studies on ISX-B.
