Abstract

Ion-exchange resin-based desulfurization concept is being considered for the recovery and recycle of spent seed from a coal-fired MHD power plant. The concept has been put forth at UTSI.Strevel, (UT 1992) has carried out process variables studies for this concept. This thesis includes the continuation of Strevel's work in the area of process variable studies. Experimentation also included investigation about the location of the carbonate ion in the resin affinity chart and determination of the cycle efficiencies. The Multi Attribute analysis of the fixed-bed results was carried out andIRA-68 resin was selected as the most suitable resin for this process.Based on this resin, a process design was carried out for a 300 MWt,MHD plant burning high sulfur Illinois no. 6 coal. Economic analysis was carried out to determine the cost of MHD seed regeneration. The Cost figures were compared with those presented for alternative processes such as the Econoseed Process; (Westinghouse, 1992). The Analysis was also extended to determine the cost of sorbent regeneration for dry sodium-based FGD system.
