The role of fractal dimension in an algal aggregation model
Aggregation plays an important role in the transfer process of matter from the surface of the ocean to the ocean floor and thus may contribute to a significant sink of carbon. Mathematical models have been developed to help scientists understand more about the aggregation process. This study modified a model to better represent the shape of the aggregate using fractal dimension and to include reproduction of live cells that are inside an aggregate. A least squares methodology was used to estimate the fractal dimension and yielded a value of 2.8. This value indicates that the aggregates are close to three dimensional but are not solid spheres.
