Abstract
An experimental residential building located in Knoxville, Tennessee was provided with air solar collectors, rock bed storage, offpeak electric heating and a back-up heat pump. The solar system operated in parallel with the air-to-air heat pump and solar modes of operation had priority over the heat pump and all resistance heating. To minimize the purchase of onpeak electricity, the control strategy provided space heating during all onpeak hours with the operation of a 1/2 hp air blower alone.
The facility was instrumented to determine electrical usage of individual system components, and system heat flows using air-side heat flow measurements. Experimental results for the period November 5, 1979 through April 13, 1980 indicate an offpeak fraction of 0.83 and a seasonal system performance coefficient of 1.66. These results indicate that the system would be beneficial to a winter-peaking electrical utility and could also operate economically under time-of-day rates.
