Abstract
The purpose of this thesis was to report on the research of a study of three security products and how they improve security in Local Area Networks (LANs). The Kerberos Authentication System, Digital Equipment Corporation's Security Encryption System, and Xerox's Encryption Unit were the studied products. Kerberos Version 4 was installed and an automated teller machine (ATM) application was written and transformed into a Kerberos application. Other goals of this thesis were to show: (1) that using Kerberos does not seriously degrade performance, (2) that it is simple to install Kerberos and (3) that converting an application to use Kerberos can be done easily.
